Earrings, Huia & Tūī - Whiringa-ā-nuku
Box and Design Information: Whiringa-ā-nuku 2021
Huia and Tūī, two beautiful birds endemic to Aotearoa. We chose these birds because in te ao Māori, the Huia is a symbol of nobility, leadership and hierarchy. The white-tipped tail feathers were worn as head adornments to signify chiefs and people of great mana (authority and power).
The Tūī was adorned with a whetū (star) on its neck by Rehua (father to the children of Matariki & guardian in the heavens), to bring a voice and to remind everyone of its origin.
Each earring relates to either the Huia or Tūī bird, with text, pattern, silhouettes and shapes.
